Enhance your experience at The Gluten Free Shop & Café
In January 2016 we, as The Norfolk Gluten Free Company, opened the long anticipated Gluten Free Shop and Café on Timberhill in Norwich.
Picture this – a cold beer in hand, sitting in the sunshine whilst enjoying a light brunch….something that most people take for granted, but if you are Coeliac or have to follow a gluten free diet this is much harder to do – and we would love to offer people that opportunity!
Help us to get seating outside in time for the summer, and enjoy a drink or two too!
We would really love to put outdoor seating outside of our café so that we can enhance the experience for customers, but we need your help towards the license application with the council, and to fund chairs and tables.
More importantly, we also need a Premises Alcohol License from the council, which also includes an advertisement in the local paper. We can’t wait to get back to stocking a wide range of beers, wines and spirits – including some great local ones – and you will then be able to take away your favorite gluten free tipple to consume at home too.
We are Louisa & Tony, and we are passionate about small and local producers, and in our shop we sell a great selection artisan products, as well as many family favourites. We have lots of experience as we opened the first exclusively gluten free grocery store in the UK in 2014, originally on the Norwich ring road, but now in Norwich City Centre.
Everything on sale at the shop and on the café menu is gluten free, and many items are also free from dairy or vegan too. With amazing wheat free bread and cakes, and wonderful pies, there is something for everyone to enjoy. After browsing through the well-stocked gluten free shop upstairs, you must make sure you stay and relax with a freshly locally roasted & ground coffee, luxurious hot chocolate, or a delicate Sri Lankan tea.
Why gluten free? Gluten is a part of the protein found in wheat, barley and rye…the main ingredient in so many foods…so why be gluten free? Its reported that 1 in 100 people in the UK have Coeliac Disease, a serious autoimmune condition, in which the body attacks itself when even a tiny bit of gluten is consumed by the sufferer – it can lead to many more health complications too, and the only remedy is a strict completely gluten free diet for life. If you think you may be showing symptoms (see www.coeliac.org.uk) go to see your GP.
You can be gluten intolerant even if you are not Coeliac, and more people are now finding that they are suffering from anything from brain fog and migraines, skin rashes and aching joints, to feeling bloated and uncomfortable after a meal containing gluten. There is a health backlash going on right now, many are trying out following a gluten or wheat free diet, and with today’s diet high in heavily processed convenience foods, it’s no wonder that people are not feeling well and looking towards alternatives; the trend towards a more traditional and unprocessed diet, one that is naturally gluten free, is set to continue.
Risks and challenges
Once our project is funded we will be applying to the local council for chairs and tables outside, and for a premises licence – both processes take around 6 weeks and are very likely to be approved without a hitch. Occasionally you get objections, but ultimately they will go through even if there are some conditions imposed.
We applied for an off-license for our previous shop successfully ourselves because we have a really good understanding of the law and always play by the rules with due diligence; we previously sold a really great selection of gluten free beers, Norfolk wines & local liqueurs responsibly for adults to enjoy.
Once its all been approved we will buy chairs and tables, and get in touch with our producers so that we are fully stocked up with all your favourite gluten free beverages.
We have some great rewards on offer, including a free meal, tickets to one of our special gluten free Kickstarter Summer BBQs, or even social media promotion of your business.
We’ve got some great local beers, wines and spirits lined up to sell both to take away, and to enjoy with us whilst you shop, or have lunch with friends; and we may even host some special beer and wine tasting evenings too – let us have your ideas!
Remember if we don’t meet our target then we don’t get the funds….every penny counts, and rewards start from just £5…
With your help and support we can make the project a great success!
